Standardpanzer Series II, Group A Prototype, Panzermuseum Munster

Taken by Kenneth Østergaard in April 2105

As the name suggests, this is from a second series of prototypes, of which 26 were tested from 1961/62. There were two groups (A and B) from two different sets of manufacturers, but only two group B machines were completed before cancellation. The name Leopard had not yet been coined, and they were known as Standardpanzer.

A lot of prototypes still exist in various museums, but most have turrets from different prototype or pre-production series. This is one of the few that is a genuine Series II machine.
