This list of Leopard 2 reference material was originally compiled from books in my own reference library.
Given the limitations of my knowledge and the breadth of my reference library, this list is by no means
complete; there are plenty of sources of Leopard 2 information that are not included on this list.
A big thank you goes to the following individuals for their contributions to this list:
- Thomas Antonsen
- Harald Hartwig
- Frank Lobitz
- Alan Ng
- Michael Shackleton
Thank you very much to all who have given their time to keep this list current and useful!
Any reader wishing to contact me regarding any errors or omissions are encouraged to do so via email at

Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 - Entwicklung und Einsatz in der Bundeswehr (Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank - Development and German Army Service)
Frank Lobitz, 2009, Tankograd Publishing (Erlangen, Germany)
ISBN : 9783936519080
-
320 pages, hard cover, full German and English text, 679 photos (mostly colour - only a few black/white),
97 graphics and 2 four-side 1:35 scale drawings (depicting the 2A4 and 2A5)
-
volume 1 of a 2 part study of the Leopard 2 main battle tank (volume 2 is described immediately below)
-
the author, Frank Lobitz, is a serving member of the Bundeswehr who has spent his career in and around Leopard 1s and 2s
... this unique perspective has allowed him to create an extremely engaging and useful reference on the Leopard 2
-
the definitive reference on the Leopard 2 in German service ... if you plan to acquire only two Leopard 2 reference
books, this should be one of them (and the second volume should be the other)
Edit (2009/08/31) : ... and The Danish Leopard 2A5 should be the third of the aforementioned two purchases
-
the book contains a large number of high quality photos which should please even the most AMS afflicted individuals
-
the development of the Leopard 2 from prototype to series production vehicle is thoroughly documented with the lavish use of mostly colour
photos and line drawings
-
the differences between Leopard 2A0-4 vehicles of different production batches are clearly explained with many
sketches and photographs ... the same treatment is given to the improved Leopard 2A5, 2A6 and 2A6M
-
brief coverage is given to the development of specialized vehicles, such as the Bergepanzer 3 Büffel,
the PSB 2 Rapid Bridge Launcher, the LEGUAN bridge layer and the AEV 3 Kodiak
-
further combat capability improvements which ultimately led to the 2A5, 2A6 and 2A6M are covered by following
the development of KWS I-III and the TVM 1&2 trials vehicles

Kampfpanzer Leopard 2 - Internationaler Einsatz und Varianten (Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank - International Service and Variants)
review/summary provided by Harald Hartwig and Frank Lobitz
Frank Lobitz, 2009, Tankograd Publishing (Erlangen, Germany)
ISBN : 9783936519099
-
296 pages, full German and English text, 747 photos, 30 illustrations
-
volume 2 of a 2 part study of the Leopard 2 main battle tank (volume 1 is described immediately above)
-
the book contains a brief summary of the development of the Leopard 2 (for those who do not own vol. 1)
-
the balance of the book is devoted to the Leopard 2 in foreign service, by nation, with one chapter devoted to
each nation
-
Leopard 2 users covered in this book would include; Sweden, The Netherlands,
Spain, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Chile, Singapore, Canada, Austria, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland
-
each chapter is organized as follows:
- a short summary of the procurement and use of the Leopard 2
- a detailed description of the procurement and nation specific modifications (if applicable)
- an exploration of the gun tank variants used, including detailed explanations of any nation specific
sub-systems or modifications
- a discussion of any vehicles of the Leopard 2 family also in use with the nation (eg. Bergepanzer 3)
- a quick explanation of the nation's integration and use of the Leopard 2 in its armed forces
- photos of trials or prototype vehicles
- main in action and detail photos of each variant of the gun tank used
- a side profile line drawing with captions noting the differences of the nation specific vehicle and the
equivalent gun tank in service with the Bundeswehr
- if applicable, detail and in action photos of any major add-ons or modifications to the nation's
gun tanks
- photo coverage of any Leopard 2 family vehicles used by the nation
-
to say that this book is packed with high quality pictures would not be doing it justice - it is full of both detail
shots and in action type photos ... enough to keep most modelers happy

-
172 pages, hard cover, English text, all colour photos, 2 pages of 1:35 scale plans of the Leopard 2A5 DK

the book covers the complete development history of the Danish Leopard 2A5 from creation of
the vehicle concept to the QRF version currently serving in Afghanistan.
-
full of great gobs of very high quality photos of in action vehicles as well as numerous detail photos
shot from multiple angles (something I've wanted to see in a reference book for quite some
time because that's how I photograph vehicles)
-
this book is very comfortably nestled in the must have category as it is one of the best modeling reference
books I have ever laid hands on - it was very clearly written with the AMS afflicted modeler in mind

Carl Schulze, 2010, Tankograd Publishing (Erlangen, Germany)
- 64 pages, soft cover, German text with complete English translation, all colour photos,
1:35 scale plans of the Leopard 2A6M-CAN
- the book deals with the Leopard 2A6M-CAN in active service in Afghanistan from August 2007 to the present,
with a distinct emphasis on operations in 2009
-
the book consists of 5 pages of text followed by plenty of high quality photos with captions (in both
German and English)
- contains the following elements/subsections:
-
synopsis of Canadian operations in Afghanistan with a discussion of factors that led to the decision
to deploy tanks in support of the Canadian battlegroup

Wilhelm Stöcker, 2002, Bernard & Graefe Verlag (Bonn, Germany)
ISBN : 3763762272
- 183 pages, hard cover, German text with many colour photos and several line drawings
- although dealing primarily with the 2A5, a small number of pages are devoted to photographic coverage
of the 2A6
- most of the pictures feature in action shots of vehicles (lots of diorama ideas), but there are
enough detail oriented photos to keep modeller types happy
- contains numerous pictures of the Leopard 2A5's deployed to the Balkans for KFOR
- includes detailed pictures of most of the components of the German AGDUS and the US MILES training
simulation systems as fitted to the Leopard 2
- contains very detailed line drawings on the Leopard 2A5 in addition to comprehensive diagrams of the
official Bundeswehr 3-colour camo pattern
- a great book for the Leopard 2 modeller or enthusiast - highly recommended if you can find a copy
Leopard 2 - Ein Spitzenprodukt deutscher Waffentechnik
Michael Scheibert and Wolfgang Schneider, 1986, Podzun-Pallas Verlag GmbH (Friedberg, Germany)
ISBN : 3790902659
- 48 pages, soft cover, German text, black and white photos (although the front and back covers
contain colour photos) and several line drawings
- provides primarily photo coverage (with captions) of the Leopard 2A0-4, the Leopard 2 NL
and the Panzer 87
- most photos are detail oriented (ie. modeller's dream) with many interior photos and not much
in the way of "in action" photos
- this book contains a lot of really good photos of early Leopard 2's even if the the quality
of the photographs is a little dated (ie. typical of 1980's era modeller reference books)
Leopard 2A4
Javier de Mazarrasa, 2001, Reserva Anticipada Ediciones (Barcelona, Spain)

-

Leopard 2A4 from the KPz-70 through to prototypes and series production vehicles
-
all of the photos depict vehicles "in action"
-
several illustrations of the Leopard 2A4 are included which appear to be identical to those found
in the Speilberger Leopard books
-
contains a complete list of all 2A4's in Spanish service, which includes the vehicle registration numbers
and the unit to which the vehicle is attached
Leopard 2/2A5 - Concord Mini Color Series
Walter Böhm, 1998, Concord Publications Co. (Hong Kong, China)
ISBN : 9623616376
- 48 pages, soft cover, English text with all colour photos

- vehicles covered would include the 2A1-4 and 2A5 in service with the Bundeswehr, the
Bergepanzer 3 and vehicles in foreign service (Panzer 87, 2A4 NL, 2A5 NL and 2 whole photos of the Strv 122)
-
given that the publishing date of this book is 1998, most of the photo coverage is of Leopard 2A4 variants
in Bundeswehr service ... Leopard 2A5 coverage is approximately 15 pages of photos and captions
- contains 1:35 scale plans of the Leopard 2A0 (Batch 1) and several colour side-view illustrations of
in-service gun tanks
Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank 1979-1998 (Osprey New Vanguard 24)
Michael Jerchel & Uwe Schnellbacher with colour illustrations by Michael Badrocke,
1998, Osprey Publishing Ltd. (London England)
ISBN : 1855326914
- 48 pages, soft cover, English text with black and white photos and colour illustrations
- the format and style of the content should be quite familiar to readers of Osprey books and the New Vanguard series
- provides coverage of the Leopard 2 from early prototypes through to the 2A5, with some coverage of the Bergepanzer 3 and
Leopard 2s in foreign service (Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden)
- as is the case with older Osprey books, the colour plates and the vehicle history are superb but the black
and white photos are mostly too small to be of much value to the modeller
Waffen-Arsenal Special Band 17 - Leopard 2A5 by Michael Scheibert
1996
ISBN: 3-7909-0576-3
- softcover, 48 pages, all German text

the rear looking camera, driver's station and a general walkaround showing the differences of a Leopard 2A5.
- It also briefly mentioned the Strv.122.
- Not a very exciting book.
Urban Warrior Upgrading the Leopard 2 MOUT and Beyond
Unclassified No.11. Stefan Marx, Amberlsand Publishing, Munich, 2008
-
A4, 88 pages and more than 200 images, drawings and artist's impressions, softcover, English text
-
This comprehensive profile reveals the present and future possibilities of the Leopard 2 concerning
Armour/Firepower Ammunition/Secondary Armament/Command & Control/Sights/Mobility/Communications/Navigation/Training/Support
-
Special attention has been given to the urban environment and technical gadgets to make the beast even more lethal and effective.
-
New variants and prototypes are described in detail and evaluated reflecting actual lessons learned in recent conflicts.
-
What is MOUT? This doesn't get explained until well into the book - page 59!
-
The English used is very Germanic with very long sentences that are difficult to understand in places.
-
Artist impressions of 2A6 are dreadfully inaccurate (for example they all have 2A4 driver's hatches amongst
other blunders) so it's a shame they occupy three whole pages.
-
Layout/design is none too good.

- just less than 1/2 of the book is devoted to the Leopard 2 (coverage starts at page 224), with a fair bit of
attention being given to the development of various trials vehicles
- Leopard 2 gun tank coverage primarily focuses on the 8 production batches of the 2A0-4 and the Panzer 87
(the 2A4 in Swiss service) with decent photographic coverage of the prototype vehicles TVM max and TVM min
- contains some coverage of the Bergepanzer 3 (including a set of very detailed scale plans) and brief
mention of the Fahrschulpanzer Leopard 2
- contains line drawings of the prototype 2AV, batch 1-8 Leopard 2A0-4 vehicles, the Leopard 2A4 NL, the Panzer 97,
the Strv 122 (termed the 2A5 S in the book) and the Bergepanzer 3
- definitely worth owning due to the very comprehensive nature of the photo and textual content, though this
book may be superfluous if one has already acquired Frank Lobitz' Leopard 2 books

ISBN : 376375203X
- 316 pages, hardcover, English text with black and white photos with some fold-out color profiles
- Leopard 2 coverage fron page 206 to 267, mostly about Leopard 2 development
- one colour fold-out profile of the Leopard 2

Leopard 2 power pack
Modern Combat Vehicles 3 : Leopard
A.J. Barker, 1981, Ian Allan Ltd. (Shepperton, England)
ISBN : 0711010366
- 112 pages, hard cover, English text, black and white photos, line drawings
- despite the Leopard 2 prominently featured on the cover, this is primarily a Leopard 1 family book
- the book contains one chapter (consisting of text and photos) involving the development of the Leopard 2 from prototype
to the first batch production vehicles
- does not include any "in service" photos of the Leopard 2, likely due to the fact that this book was written just
as the Leopard 2 was being accepted for service with the Bundeswehr
Tank War - Central Front : NATO vs Warsaw Pact (Osprey Elite 26)
Steven Zaloga with illustrations by Simon McCouaig, 1989, Osprey Publishing Limited (London, England)
ISBN : 0850459044
- 64 pages, soft cover, English text, black and white photos and colour illustrations
- Leopard 2 content consists of 1 full page colour plate of Bundeswehr Leopard 2A4's (and the associated
descriptions which always contains a gold-mine of information), one partial colour plate depicting a
Leopard 2A4 NL in CAT 85 markings, and several black and white photos of German and Dutch Leopard 2's
- Bundeswehr armour crew uniforms are depicted in a colour plate (and description)
- once again, as is the case in most Osprey books, the small black and white photos are too small to be
really useful (in my opinion), but the textual content together with the colour plates/illustrations
(and the associated descriptions) are simply excellent and make Osprey books a very worthwhile acquisition
Tanks Illustrated No. 7 - German Tanks 1945 to the Present
by Peter Gudgin, Arms and Armour Press, 1984
ISBN: 0-85368-621-1
- softcover, 72 pages
-
Do not be fooled by the name of the book, what other tanks have the Germans had since 1945?
-
Whole book is B/W photos with the exception of the front cover and a total of 8 pages of colour insert.
-
It explains in the introduction the fact that the Bundeswehr was not formed in 1955, with no tank production before that,
so the first few pages show Panzer IV, Panther and Tiger 2 captured near the end of the war - for no reason at all!
-
Starting from page 16, it goes straight to the development of the Leopard, without even mentioning the use of M47/M48.
-
It shows photos of early Leopard up to Leopard 2, including other variants such as the Engineering Vehicles and so on.
It even includes the ill-fated PzH 155-1 and the MBT-70.
-
It then goes on to have photos of other tracked vehicles such as HS 30, Marder APC, Jagdpanzer Kanone, Roland, TPZ-1
and even 8x8 Luchs! Maybe the author was running out of photos of tanks!
-
Anyway, loads of Leopard photos.
-
All photos have English captions.
Allied Battle Tanks - Western tank units on the Central European frontier (Europa Militaria No.4)
Yves Debay, 1990, Windrow and Green Ltd. (London, England)
ISBN : 1872004350
- 66 pages, soft cover, English text, all colour photos
- Leopard 2 content includes a total of 7 pages of photos (with captions) of West German and Dutch Leopard 2A4s
- the photos are all of the "in action" type and are of very high quality (Yves Debay is one of the best military photo
journalists out there)
- I originally purchased this book for the Challenger 1 and Leopard C1 photos, so the presence of Leopard 2 photos is
a bonus
- by itself, this book does not contain many Leopard 2 photos, but I think it is a very good book as it provides an
excellent set of photos of Western MBTs in the dying days of the Cold War
The Leopard Family
Michael Scheibert, 1989, Schiffer Publishing Ltd (Pennsylvania, USA)
ISBN : 0887401678
- 52 pages, soft cover, English text, black and white photos (with captions) although the cover card
has colour photos on both sides)
- a translation of the German edition original published in 1988 by Podzun-Pallas-Verlag (Friedberg, Germany)
- 9 pages devoted to the Leopard 2A0-4 gun tank, Fahrschulpanzer and Bergepanzer 3 (2 photos of a prototype)
- not a great book for Leopard 2 content as most of the pages are devoted to the Leopard 1 family of vehicles
Leopard 1 and 2 : The spearheads of the West German Armored Forces
Thomas Laber, 1990, Concord Publications Co. (Hong Kong, China)
ISBN : 9623610076
- 64 pages, soft cover, English text with mostly black and white photos but including 8 pages of colour photos
- approximately 1/3 of this book is devoted to the Leopard 2
- covers the use of the Leopard 1 and 2 family of vehicles in service with the Bundeswehr and other nations
(Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, Australia and Greece) ... photos are primarily of the
"in action" type (with captions) but with some detail oriented shots
- Leopard 2 content would include the 2A0-4 vehicles with some photos of the prototypes (1st gen trials vehicle and the 2AV),
and a few photos of the Bergepanzer 3 and the Fahrschulpanzer Leopard 2 (driver training vehicle)
Armor of the West (Concord Color Series 4004)
Yves Debay, 1992, Concord Publications Co. (Hong Kong, China)
ISBN : 9629617046
- 94 pages, soft cover, all colour photos
- while about 1/3 of this book deals with British armour (two guesses why I purchased it), it contains
5 pages of photos of West German Leopard 2's and 3.5 pages of photos of Dutch Leopard 2's
- all of the photos in the book are of very high quality (and in glorious full colour)
REFORGER : Return of Forces to Germany
Arnold Meisner, 1989, Concord Publications Co (Hong Kong, China)
ISBN : 9629610025
- 60 pages, soft cover, English text, mostly black and white photos but with the centre 4 pages in colour
(just like the old Squadron-Signals books of the 1980s ... I guess this kind of dates me)
- Leopard 2 content consists of 1 colour photo and 2.5 pages of black and white photos (most of this book deals
with American subjects)

- soft cover, 48 pages, English text, all colour photos
-
contains a 14 page article entitled "Hessischer Löwe 2002 - German Armor put to the test"
-
the article contains many pictures of Leopard 2A4's and Bergepanzer 3's participating in a Field Ex ... I would estimate
that just less than half of the photos in the article are of Leopard 2's

- soft cover, 48 pages, English text, all colour photos
-
the centre-fold illustration depicts a Bundeswehr Leopard 2A6 (one side view only)
-
the book also contains an article entitled "Black Panthers" which almost isn't worth mentioning in this list as
it only contains one smallish picture of a Leopard 2A6
-
not great Leopard 2 content in my opinion ... I bought this book for the Royal Lancers article

-
contains a 15 page article entitled "Norway's Telemark Battalion" which contains 3 pages of pictures of Leopard 2A4's

Naslednik "Tigra". Osnovnoj tank "Leopard"
Suvorov S, Jauza, 2014, Moscow
ISBN: 978-5-699-71900-6
-
224 pages, hard cover, Russian text, colour and black and white photos, some line drawings.
-
An attempt to tell the whole story of Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 from conception to the date of publication.
-
At first glance it covers a lot of ground which it does with a LOT of photos.
Some are copied from other books, are familiar from the internet, taken in well-known museums plus quite a few new photos.
-
Captioning is dubious with many vehicles mis-identified.
-
One vehicle taken seriously is a Canadian heavy reconnaissance version of Leopard 1 which has two pages devoted to
it as if it was real.
It only ever existed as a model of an imaginary vehicle!
-
As a result of this, this book cannot be taken seriously in the reviewer's opinion.

IPMS Hellas Magazine - issue 15
- CD, PDF and JPEG files, Greek text
- e-Magazine (sorry for the gratuitous use of a buzz-word) available on CD from the
IPMS Hellas website
- the magazine is provided in PDF format, with several different file sizes provided for different output resolutions
(high-res, inkjet printer and screen/monitor)
- contains a very nice article on the Leopard 2A4 in Hellenic service ... which I could not understand as I do not read
Greek text (I've avoided the obvious pun here)
- the article appears to provide a history of the development of the Leopard 2 in addition to the history of the acquisition
of the Leopard 2 for the Hellenic Armed Forces
- the article contains many excellent detail photos as well as a colour illustration of the camo pattern on the 2A4 in Hellenic
service
- the CD also contains 76 high-res photos of the Leopard 2A4 HEL (all of the photos included in the article plus more)
- highly recommended as an excellent source of reference photos of the Leopard 2A4
IPMS Hellas Magazine - issue 16
- CD, PDF and JPEG files, Greek text
- e-Magazine (sorry for the gratuitous use of a buzz-word) available on CD from the
IPMS Hellas website
- the magazine is provided in PDF format, with several different file sizes provided for different output resolutions
(high-res, inkjet printer and screen/monitor)
- contains a lengthy article on the Leopard 2A6-HEL ... which I can't understand as I still have
not learned to read Greek
- the article appears to discuss the development of the Leopard 2A5/A6 as well as the design and manufacture of the 2A6-HEL (but don't
quote me on this because I made an educated guess based on the few words and acronyms I was able to pick out in the text)
- the article includes a number of excellent detail photos
- a lot of information for the modeler wishing to build a 2A6-HEL appears to have been included, which seems to discuss the
various injection molded kits, PE sets and resin updates that could be used to build a 2A6-HEL ... again it's a crying shame I do not
read Greek as I'm sure this information is top notch
- the CD also contains 90 high-res photos of the Leopard 2A6-HEL (all of the photos included in the article plus more)
-
A must have for anyone wishing to build a Leopard 2A6-HEL, and very highly recommended
otherwise due to the excellent reference photos included on the CD.
For example, the CD contains the first good photos of the under-armour APU housing that
I've come across; such photos are applicable to other Leopard 2 versions such as the 2E (Spain)
and the 2A5-DK (Denmark).
